SHIP'S ANCHOR

"OVER 200? YEAR'S OLD"

Recently recovered from the North  Sea

It is a Old Wooden stock type. Overall size is 80 inches High x 82 inches Wide

Heavily encrusted, so all sizes "approximate" due to wasting etc.

Forged steel round Shank 4-1/2" at base, and 3-1/4" at stock.

Forged steel Flukes Each was 15" wide x 20" long, with a strengthening 3" x 3" square web

The stock Ring is 1.9" diameter and 7-1/4" inside, 11-1/2" outside diameter

The 82" long wooden stock is 10" square in centre, to 6" square at ends, and was constructed in 2 halves with 1-1/4" wooden dowels. It appears (under the growth) that 4 steel bands secured the two halves.

Marine archaeologists have confirmed it is an early anchor, and over 200 years old.

The long forged chain has a link size of 5" x 3-1/4" but it is thought unlikely to be as old as the anchor, so we assume that this anchor could have belonged to an old ship that had its chain renewed just before its tragic loss.

Business is ship-shape for Tallshipsworld

THERE'S a place in Hartlepool where HMS Trincomalee and HMS Warrior stand proudly in the same room.

So is HMS Victory and many other famous boats.

IMAGINE a place where the world's most famous ships can be found in one spot.

Historic vessels which date back centuries all within feet of each other.

It's no dream. It is reality at Hartlepool Marine Supplies based on the Tofts Industrial Estate, in Brenda Road, in town.

This diverse firm is going strong and that's partly down to its fantastic range of top-class model ships.

They are made from the finest materials such as rosewood, mahogany, teak and other exotic tropical woods. Each stands proud in huge cabinets

As well as ships, there's books, telescopes, ropes, anchors and old fashioned diving helmets.

But this is not just a top-of-the-range gift shop.

Everything the modern sailor ever needed can also be found under the roof of this family firm which has existed in town for more than 80 years.
